Simeon ha-Tzaddik

Simeon ha-Tzaddik
(fl. ?4th-2nd cent.)
   High priest. He played an important role in the Keneset Gedolah, which formulated the liturgy, estabished the canon of Scripture, and formed the Sanhedrin. Scholars have suggested that he belonged to the Hasideans and supported the Seleucids. He has also been credited with ensuring the central role of study in the Jewish tradition and stemming the influence of Hellenization.
